Narrator-led. Full of emotional range. Prominent silence. Unscripted language. Explanatory commas minimal. Tangents welcome!

These are some characteristics of oral histories, and also some of the qualities producer/editor Sarah Geis believes make podcasts that buzz with life and sound less, well...  podcasty.

In this workshop she’ll lead participants through an exploration of how oral history ideas can help podcast hosts sound more like themselves, as well as the methods and production processes she’s developed over the past 18 years of deep collaborative work with narrators and teams. The day will be packed with listening, discussion, and breakout activities.

Special guests will include Yohance Lacour, host and producer of You Didn’t See Nothin, who will discuss the collaborative process from the side of the narrator.

Topics covered:

  • Using life history style long-form interviews to generate podcast scripts and identify story arcs, collaborative editing processes, voicing and improvisation

  • Collaborative relationships between narrator and producer, building trust, insider-outsider dynamics, ethical considerations

  • Working with historical and personal archive

  • Identifying the sound and style of a project

Materials needed: Something to record audio with (could be your smartphone). No prerequisites for participation.
